RE: Traffic Pattern Change at McPherson Airport (MPR) Effective January 1, 2010 the traffic patterns to Runway 18 and Runway 26 at McPherson Airport (MPR) will be changed to right-hand turns. These changes will be issued via NOTAM immediately but may not be published on charts and AF/Ds until their next publication dates. The change will move the pattern from over the city and refinery to flying over open farm ground. While this change should ultimately increase the safety of operations at McPherson Airport, there will be a period of transition which will require increased vigilance by all who fly in and out of McPherson. To maximize safety during this transition please utilize the following guidelines (good procedures at anytime, but especially important now)… 1) Use clear, intelligible communications using standard phraseology to report position & intentions. Please emphasize “right” legs (ie: “right base, runway 18”) during reports to Rwy 18 & 26. UNICOM: 122.80 2) Landing lights on in the airport area. 3) MOST IMPORTANT: Heads up, watching for potential conflicts with pilots using the “old” pattern, as well as non-radio equipped aircraft. There will be increased potential for head-on traffic on the base legs and turn to final. Beautiful, light-wind days may also cause conflicts as traffic could end up head-to-head on downwind legs to opposite direction runways. Runway 18 is the designated no-wind runway.
